Fuerteventura Honeymoon Guide

With three major beach resorts boasting low-key, family friendly entertainment, world-class water sports and accommodation options to suit all budgets, Fuerteventura offers all the ingredients you need for a relaxing European island honeymoon or romantic holiday.

Fuerteventura is a relatively undeveloped island, best known for having the least spoiled and longest white-sand beaches of the Canary Islands.

What to do and see in Fuerteventura

Choose to holiday at Corralejo, the largest resort on Fuerteventura, which features a choice of white-sand beaches backed by numerous bars, restaurants and hotels.

Or try the purpose-built family resort of Caleta de Fuste, with a man-made beach and lively nightlife.

Further south sits the laid-back resort of Jandia, renowned for its 35km-long coastline indented with some of the best beaches on the island.

With year-round winds, Jandia is a great windsurfing destination and hosts the annual Professional Windsurfers Association’s (PWA) World Windsurfing Championship every August.

Inland, discover a diverse landscape of ancient volcanoes and copper-coloured plains scattered with soaring palm trees and picturesque, centuries-old whitewashed villages and windmills.

Fuerteventura has the oldest history in the Canary Islands and is easy to explore by bus or hire car. From Pajara to Betancuria, the road winds through a haunting moonscape.

Along the way, discover the palm-fringed wadi-style oasis of Vega del Río de Palmas and the whitewashed village of Antiqua, with its 18th century Nuestra Señora de Antigua – one of the island’s oldest churches.

At tiny Betancuria, which sprawls across the stark mountain slopes of the Parque Natural de Betancuria, discover a magnificent 17th century church and square lined with whitewashed houses that include the Casa Santa María on Plaza Iglesia, a beautiful Spanish-colonial house showcasing the island's handicrafts, culture and history.

Best beaches in Fuerteventura

Head to the sugar-white sands of Sotavento beach, offering perfect conditions for sunbathing, windsurfing and kite surfing.

Or stretch out on the golden sands of Playa de Mattoral at Morro Jable and the stunning white beaches of Corralejo, flanked by the huge sand dunes of a national park.

The best beaches in Fuerteventura, include…

Playa de Jandia

(Morro Jable) – Stay close to the water sports action or wander off and find your own secluded spot to sunbathe on this gorgeous 4km-long golden-sand beach that offers perfect conditions for swimming, windsurfing and kite surfing.

Also known as Playa de Mattoral, this wide beach is flanked by a long palm-fringed promenade lined with bars, restaurants and a choice of upmarket hotels.

Beach facilities include parasols and sun loungers for hire, toilets, showers and a choice of water sports including pedalos (foot pedal boats), sailing catamarans, jet skiing, waterskiing, kite surfing and windsurfing.

Splash out with a sojourn at the luxurious Hotel Fuerteventura Princess or stay at the family friendly Hotel Club Jandia Princess.

Playa de Jandia stretches north from the fishing village of Morro Jable on the Jandia Peninsula and is just a small section of a 35km-long stretch of beachfront that runs around the south-eastern tip of Fuerteventura.

Playa de Jandia is located 8km from Jandia and around 86km from the capital, Puerto del Rosario.

Playa de Sotavento

(Costa Calma) – Be challenged by the best kite and windsurfing location on Fuerteventura or just pick an idyllic place to sunbathe and swim on this wide stretch of white sand that extends south for around 25km.

Playa de Sotavento hosts a leg of the PWA’s World Windsurfing Championship every August. There are usually no facilities at Playa de Sotavento, so you need to take your own food and drink.

However, beach facilities close to Costa Calma include parasols and sun loungers for rent, toilets, showers and kite surfing and windsurfing action.

Unwind in style at the nearby Hotel Rio Calma or at the Costa Calma Beach Resort.

Playa Barca

(Costa Calma) – Unwind on this long white-sand beach fringing the town. Several bars, restaurants and hotels are located nearby, including the Hotel Rio Calma and the Costa Calma Beach Resort. Playa Barca adjoins the northern end of Playa de Sotavento.

Beach facilities here include parasols and sun loungers for hire, toilets, showers and kite and windsurfing equipment.

Costa Calma is located around 70km south of Puerto del Rosario.

Grandes Playas Corralejo

Pick your own spot to sunbathe on this broad 7km-long stretch of soft white sand that sits between turquoise waters and the low bush-covered sand dunes of the Parque Natural de las Dunas, an area covering 2700ha.

The beach is just 2km from the town centre and offers ideal conditions for swimming, kite surfing and windsurfing.

A mini-train shuttles beachgoers to the edge of the village, from where it’s just a short stroll to the beach. The tiny island of Isla de Lobos sits some 3km offshore and is easily visited on a day excursion. There are no facilities on this wide beach so take your own food and drink.

Alternatively, unwind at the luxury beachfront Hotel Riu Palace Tres Islas for a range of creature comforts or stay at the Moorish-style Hotel Gran Atlantis Bahia Real, located closer to town at the northern end of the dunes.

Corralejo is the largest tourist resort on Fuerteventura and lies on the northeast tip of the island, around 30km north of Puerto del Rosario.

Playa del Castillo

(Caleta de Fuste) – Unwind on the pale golden sands of this wide man-made beach that shelves gently into a sheltered bay.

This manicured beach is ideal for families with young children and offers a range of facilities including parasols and sun loungers for hire, a small aquarium, children’s trampolines, mini golf and a windsurfing school.

A ‘submarine’ glass-bottom boat and catamaran offers dolphin and whale spotting excursions. Water sports include jet skiing, windsurfing and scuba diving.

The streets surrounding the palm-lined beachfront promenade are lined with shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and hotels including the luxurious beachfront Sheraton Fuerteventura Beach Golf Hotel and the family friendly Club Caleta Dorada, which features a mini water park.
