Best time to visit Madeira

The best time to visit Madeira is during the summer season from June to mid-September, when the weather is warm and sunny, and rainfall is low.

Given that it has a very mild climate, Madeira can be visited year-round. Lovers of flower and nature may prefer spring.

Madeira weather

Madeira has a mild climate with a small temperature range.

The north-east trade winds blow throughout the year, bringing cloud, humidity and rainfall to the north-facing slopes. Because of these winds, the northern side of Madeira is rainier and windier than the southern one, where the landscape is more arid.

On the northern side and in the mountains, the wind can be strong, sometimes reaching 100 kph (60mph; 54kn). The interior can often be covered by a layer of fog or low clouds.

The weather can change dramatically the higher you go, from bright sunshine on the coast to chilly fog and heavy rain within the course of a walk.

The capital, Funchal, being on the southern side of Madeira is quite sheltered from the wind. However, as the city climbs to an altitude of 800 meters (2,600 ft), the higher neighbourhoods are cooler than those below.

Here are the average temperatures for Funchal, situated on the southern coast.
